Graphophone

Features

The full list, in plain language.

Here is everything Graphophone is being built to do.

The timeline: entries and conversations by day.
The entry editor in dark mode.

Highlights

The parts you'll use every day.

Reflection

A conversation that reflects back.

Reflect with on-device AI — a multi-turn conversation that reflects back what you wrote and asks one open question at a time, in your choice of style (gentle, Socratic, Stoic, coach, or a CBT reframe). Runs on your device by default.

A conversation in dark mode: the writer's messages and the AI's replies in one thread.

Search and recall

Full-text search across every entry, instant.

Semantic search — ask 'when did I feel anxious about my dad?' and get cited matches. "On this day" surfaces past entries from the same calendar date.

Search results for the word team, with the matches highlighted.

Calendar and Timeline

Browse by month, or by what you last touched.

Calendar and Timeline views: browse a mood-tinted month grid, or scroll back through every entry and conversation by when you last touched it — so a thread you keep returning to across days stays at the top.

A month calendar in dark mode, each day coloured by mood.

Insights

Weekly, monthly, and yearly summaries.

Mined from your own history on your device by default; a model server you configure serves them instead. The year window is part of Graphophone Depth.

Gentle streaks that forgive a rest day — one missed day won't wipe a long streak, and we celebrate the return, never scold the lapse. All counted on-device.

Insights, Month view: streak, entries, days written and rhythm charts.

Your style

Choose how it talks to you.

Gentle, Socratic, Stoic, coach, or a CBT reframe — or describe the style you want in your own words.

The setting that describes how Graphophone talks to you.

Guided programs

A step a day.

Short multi-day CBT/ACT & self-compassion journeys — a step a day, each seeding an entry. On-device, at your pace.

Guided programs: short multi-day journeys, a step a day.

Everything

The complete list.

Items marked with a clock are coming; everything else is in the app.

Capture

  • Markdown entries with multiple per day, drafts, and revision history.
  • Voice journaling — record, on-device Whisper transcription, then refine the text.
  • Walk-and-talk: a lock-screen widget that lets you talk now and confirm an entry later. (coming)
  • Photo attachments, sealed blob-by-blob on-device. Short video clips (coming).
  • Auto-captured location, weather, and (opt-in) calendar / health context. (coming)
  • Apple Watch and Wear OS quick capture. (coming)

Search and recall

  • Full-text search across every entry, instant.
  • Semantic search — ask 'when did I feel anxious about my dad?' and get cited matches.
  • Memory anchors: revisit a place, see your past entries from there. (coming)
  • "On this day" surfaces past entries from the same calendar date.
  • Calendar and Timeline views: browse a mood-tinted month grid, or scroll back through every entry and conversation by when you last touched it — so a thread you keep returning to across days stays at the top.

Reflection

  • Reflect with on-device AI — a multi-turn conversation that reflects back what you wrote and asks one open question at a time, in your choice of style (gentle, Socratic, Stoic, coach, or a CBT reframe). Runs on your device by default.
  • Perspectives: read one entry through three distinct lenses at once — question it, weigh what you can control, and find a fairer thought — each generated on your device by default. Part of Graphophone Depth.
  • Save a summary: distil a whole conversation into a short, clean note that lives alongside the raw thread. On your device by default; a model server you configure serves it instead.
  • A daily prompt on Home, picked for the date and the time of day from a curated set — morning leans toward setting an intention, evening toward looking back. No model runs to produce it. Opt-in reminders nudge you to come back and write.
  • Gentle streaks that forgive a rest day — one missed day won't wipe a long streak, and we celebrate the return, never scold the lapse. All counted on-device.
  • Weekly, monthly, and yearly summaries — mined from your own history on your device by default; a model server you configure serves them instead. The year window is part of Graphophone Depth.
  • Pattern detective: surfaces which of your tags and themes track with your mood, on-device. Cross-referencing (opt-in) Health, calendar, and weather is coming.
  • Time-travel chat: talk to past-you grounded in a chosen window of your journal. (coming)
  • Contradiction tracking: surfaces times you said one thing and did another, gently. (coming)
  • Future-you letters, openable on a date you pick. (coming)

The AI router

  • Tier 1 — Apple Foundation Models and Gemini Nano where available, free and fast. (coming)
  • Tier 2 — On-device tiny model, downloaded on first run. The default for everyone.
  • Tier 3 — Downloadable larger open-weight models via the candle pure-Rust engine. We ship only weights whose licence permits commercial use (Apache-2.0 and similar).
  • Tier 4 — Your home Ollama or LM Studio server. Tailscale-friendly.
  • Tier 5 — Your OpenAI / Anthropic / OpenRouter key. Opt-in per feature.
  • A network indicator surfaces every outbound call before any data leaves.

Privacy controls

  • Per-tag AI access controls — #therapy and #private are capped to this device unless you explicitly opt in to your own model server, and a #no-ai entry is read by no model at all.
  • Decoy mode: a separate passphrase opens a parallel innocuous journal.
  • Legacy mode (coming): Shamir-split keys among trusted contacts for future access.
  • Recovery code (a 256-bit dashed-hex code) as an independent unlock path from the passphrase.
  • Granular export controls. Everything in plain Markdown, with a single tap.

BYOK

  • Planned (roadmap) — not in 1.0. The only network AI path that ships today is a model server you run yourself.
  • When it ships: bring your own OpenAI, Anthropic, or OpenRouter key.
  • We will never be in the path. You'll pay your provider directly.
  • Opt-in is per feature (entries vs. prompts vs. summaries vs. Q&A), and the app warns you before anything leaves the device.
  • Outbound calls will show up in the network indicator with the provider name.
  • Free and opt-in on Free and Lifetime when it lands.
