Safety

Safety & crisis support

Graphophone is a private, on-device AI you can talk to — and a journal. This page is our public protocol for two things that matter most: making it clear you are talking to an AI, and meeting moments of crisis with real, human help. It applies on every platform, and — like everything in Graphophone — it runs on your device.

You are talking to an AI

The companion you chat with in Graphophone is an artificial intelligence — not a person, and not a licensed professional. We say so in onboarding and again in the conversation itself. The model runs on your device by default; it cannot, and does not, connect you to a human reviewer.

What Graphophone is not

Graphophone is a general wellness and journaling tool. It is not a medical device, not therapy, and not a substitute for professional care or for a crisis or emergency service. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition, and it never claims to. If you may be having a medical or mental-health emergency, do not use the app — contact the resources below or your local emergency number right away.

Our protocol

How we handle moments of crisis

If what you write expresses suicidal thoughts or self-harm, Graphophone gently surfaces the crisis resources below, right in the conversation. Our protocol:

  • Detection is on-device

Recognising a crisis cue happens entirely on your device. The words that triggered it are never logged, never transmitted, and never sent to any server — that is a hard privacy invariant, not a setting.
  • We look for more than the obvious

Detection covers direct statements, indirect or means-seeking phrasing (for example asking how), and quieter passive expressions such as feeling like a burden or that no one would notice. Because distress can build gradually, the app also weighs signals across the whole conversation, not just the last message — so a slow build isn't missed.
  • The AI never supplies means

The on-device model's instructions — which the app cannot override — direct it to never provide methods, means, dosages, or instructions that could be used for self-harm, even if asked directly or indirectly, and to seriously encourage reaching out to a trusted person, a crisis line, or emergency services.
  • Help, not handling

We show real-world resources you can reach yourself. Graphophone does not contact anyone on your behalf, and it is not a monitoring service.
  • Support is never behind a paywall

The crisis card and every resource on it are always available to everyone, free, regardless of whether you've paid for anything.
  • It stays gentle and dismissible

The support card is supportive information, shown calmly; you can dismiss it. Graphophone has no engagement-maximising mechanics, streak guilt, or manipulative nudges by design.
