How can we help?
Graphophone is built so that most things just work, offline and on-device. Here are answers to the questions we hear most. If you are still stuck, email a human — we read every message.

Contact
Email hello@graphophone.app. We aim to reply within two business days. For security reports, see our security page and use the dedicated address there.
Please never include your passphrase, recovery code, or entry contents in a support email — we never need them, and we cannot help you recover a lost passphrase.

Common questions
I forgot my passphrase. Can you recover my journal?
No — and that is the point. Your entries are encrypted with a key only your passphrase can derive. We never see it and cannot reset it. If you saved your one-time recovery code when you set up the vault, use it from the unlock screen. Without the passphrase or recovery code, the data cannot be decrypted by anyone, including us.
How do I move my journal to a new device?
Create an encrypted backup (Settings → Backup), transfer the backup file to the new device however you like, then restore it during onboarding with the same passphrase. The backup file stays encrypted in transit and at rest.
Does the AI work without an internet connection?
Yes. A tiny local model downloads to your device on first run, so reflection, summaries and ask-your-journal Q&A all run fully offline by default. Two optional paths can use the network, both off until you turn them on: a model server you run yourself (Ollama, LM Studio) on your own machine or network, and — on the roadmap — a cloud model with your own API key.
Can I use my own OpenAI or Anthropic key (BYOK)?
Not yet for cloud providers. What ships today is the other half of the idea: you can point Graphophone at a model server you run yourself (Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp) on your own machine or network, so a bigger model answers without anyone else being in the path. Bring-your-own-key cloud is on the near-term roadmap: when it ships it will be opt-in per feature and always free (you pay your provider directly). Either way, every request that leaves the device is announced before it happens, and every reply a model generates for you — on this device or on your own server — is recorded in the AI audit log, along with any test of that server’s connection.
How do I export my entries?
Settings → Vault → Export to Markdown writes your whole vault to a folder of plain Markdown you can open in Obsidian or any text editor. Export is free, unlimited, and available even on the free tier.
What is the Lifetime Pass — and is there a subscription?
The Lifetime Pass is a one-time purchase that unlocks Graphophone Depth forever. If you'd rather pay as you go, there are also monthly and yearly subscriptions in the app. All of them confer the same Depth — the larger on-device models, a year of history in Insights, hands-free conversation, your own model server, and the proactive layer; the whole core stays free regardless, with no advertising. Restore any of them on a new device with the same store account.
How do I delete everything?
Panic Wipe (Settings → Security) removes all entries, attachments, and keys from the device immediately. Uninstalling the app also removes the encrypted vault.
